For my first competition I did the best I could. Wait until next year!

I did not even want to enter the fruit wine because I didn't think it was all that good but it was the only bottle I had for that category. I knew the Riesling was pretty good but the wine I thought was the best (a 1/12 year old Pinot Noir) didn't place. Go figure!

Congrats!

I have found that state fairs are unpredictable in their judging. A pal used to say.. "what do you expect from a bunch of cow and pig farmers?"

I found that to be a harsh, but I agree that a competition that only focuses on wine is better than one that judges all sorts of other stuff.

The thing that I didn't get was that they only had one category for dry red varietals. that means a Pinot competes against a Cab or another big red. I don't see how that is possible.

Best I can

That's life in the armature wine making world the thought is this, make it The best you can and don't expect much in return, it's all subjective.
