I just pitchedthe yeast yesterday. Is there a need to test the S.G. for the firstfew days?

for educational purposes...yes

leave it right in the primary
 
As long as you have a the initial starting sg then not really except to make sure it is fermenting in case visual signs arent there.
 
I do what Al suggested. I leave the hydrometer in the primary from start to racking.
