Was wandering could you use vaccum to filter wine? In place of pumping wine through filter why not rig up vaccum to draw it through would this not be less agitation to the wine, less o2 exposure etc. ? Just a thought.AL

Yes this certainly works well. I have had an pump for over a year and use it to rack and filter. Just switch the hoses to what you need to get the job done and turn it on. I have a water type filter I got from Valley Vintners. It uses replaceable cartridges that you can get in varying sizes. They go down to 0.35 microns (but those are fairly expensive). Once you buy a couple filters, you can see what brand they are and order them cheaper. I haven't gotten a picture yet when I'm filtering, but here is a link to the VV site showing some setups.

Scroll down the page for the filter body, pumps and filters. You can also get specialty fittings if you can't make them up locally.

Here are a couple pages with direction to set up.

What I wondered Appleman could you use the vaccum with the filter part of a mini jet and bypass the pump and just use the filter plates on the mini jet?AL

A filter is a filter Al. Seems a bit redundant though if you have a mini-jet filter, I would use it as designed. Sometimes we can overthink things a bit.... If it was that hard on the wine, I don't think they would continue to sell well after many years of sales.
