Hello, I'm new to this wine thing, and I was wondering if anyone knows where I can find videos of Vacuum Pumps and of Wine Savers/ Wine Keepers- that show how they work?

Well the link you posted doesnt work for me but there is only 1 time
when the wine makes any noise and that is when it is fermenting with a
S-Type airlock on it. I dont think there are any videos on either of
these but we'd be glad to walk youthrough it. I personally use a brake
bleeder which is a vacuum pump designed for getting the air out of the
brake lines of your car and it has never been used on a car. I bought
it brand new for the winemaking purpose. The brake bleeder comes with a
2' length of hose and a few fittings, 1st you attach the hose to the
vacuum end of the pump and then attach fitting that best fits into your
bung hole (now dont get all silly on me) or the plunger type fitting
that takes up the hole inside of a multi fit bung and just pump away
starting slowly as when you reach about 10 -15 inches of vacuum the
bubbles will start to rush up to the bung as it starts degassing. when
you can eventually hold about 18 -20 inches of vacuum your batch is
suffiently degassed. The winesaver works the same way basically except
that it comes with fittings to put on wine bottles to keep them if you
dont finish off a bottle so it dont go bad for a few days. Welcome to

Don't have any video but the Vaccu-Vin works great to keep your wine fresh after you pop the cork. I took a bottle out of the fridge a couple nights ago that had been in there for at least 3 months that was half a bottle. It was an Island Mist Exotic Fruits White Zin. It tasted as fresh as a new opened bottle. I have enjoyed bottles of Cab and Merlot that have sat out on the counter sealed with the Vaccu-Vin 2-3 weeks before. I have also used it to de-gas wines with vacuum as well. Edited by: smurfe
 
How long does it take to degas with the brake bleeder wade. I have been at it for 24 hours off and on. I am holding around 12 inches right now. I can only get up to 22 inches. Is that how it is supposed to work? Last night I was getting it up to 21.5 inches. I figured the more gas you get out the more vacuum you can pull. Is this right or am I doing something wrong. I did a little video. It don't show much. It just shows some of the bubbles that are coming to the top.

swill, I didn't look at the video, but if you can hold 20" while rocking the bottle, you are done.
 
Swill, I had that problem also until I started using tha fitting that
looks more like a plunger and takes up the whole inside of the silicone
bung. What a difference it makes, if you have this fitting which I
believe all the bleeders come with give it a try and Im sure youll be
able to do this quicker and with much more effiency. The temp
should be at 75* to properly degas also!
 
Peter I'm still not at 20 yet. Still drops to around 15. But I'm getting less bubbles and I'm getting more inches of vacuum.


wade I'm still working on trying to fine the right fitting. I may have to buy a bung without a hole and drill my own. My temp is around 70. I haven't got any way to warm it up. Don't think the SWMBO will let me turn the air up. I will try to get it to hold at 20 and see what happens.
