My Tempranillo was an 18l kit. WE international w/skins. The skins bag seemed smaller than the others have been. Definitely thinner. The other internationals without skins are 16L.

Thanks Geronimo.
I contacted my online retailer about the WE SI and Eclipse series and got this reply to my surprise:

"The International with Skins Series is the exact equivalent of the Eclipse Series. They both come with 18 L of juice and a pack of grape skins."

Can someone else confirm this????

With all due respect to WE customer service, the Eclipse Shiraz kit was not 18L. I added 7L of water so you do the math

cheers

How do you know this? I can't say I've measured the bag, but it says 18L right on the package. I've done quite a few winery series kits and the package is much larger than a Cru Select 16L kit.

I'm sure I checked it a couple years ago but never wrote anything down. I will check it again with the next one I make in late sept.

As for the Selections Intl with skins, i will be starting the Brunello soon so will check the size of that as well

cheers

Just started the RJS WS Chardonnay and it is 18L of juice as shown on the box

cheers

The whites are 18L.
All reds are 16L plus skins pack, except the Pinot noir which is 18L and no skins.

I don't have a problem with the grape pack being included... but that's not what started this discussion IIRC. People are adding 7L of water to a WE Eclipse kit to make it to 6 gallons in primary. If it says 18L and you actually get 16L, that's messed up.

I just weighed an RJS WS Rosso Grande Excellente juice bag and got 42.5 lbs. Assuming the SG at 1.140 (close enough) that's 17 liters of juice. Add the 2 jars of grape skins and I can see it being 18L give or take a little. I checked several of the Mosti Mondiale kits and they were all over weight, especially the Megs. I think it's mainly a WE problem.

Aren't we to add water to make 6 gal. not including the grape pack?

I'll chime in on this because there was discussion a few weeks ago about the box vs. contents. I started a WE selection series Brunello. It said 18L on the box (did NOT specify juice) but it was 16L of juice for sure. The grape pack was a little under 2 liters.

The instructions call to add 2L of water to the juice bag to rinse it, then top up the fermeter to 23L mark BEFORE adding the grape pack.

It says in bold NOTE: Making the kit to a full 23 L before adding the grapeskin pack is crucial to the functioning of the fining and stability of the finished wine. If you make it to any other volume it will not turn out correctly, and any problems you may experience may not be solvable.

Now in my opinion, labeling 18L should be all juice. The grape pack would be an ingredient other than juice and should not be included. Just like the oak. I'm guessing that if they were produced in the USA, the FDA would not allow it to be labeled 18L.

You definitely want 23L of liquid in primary. That's how the yeast gets the FG down to the right numbers, too.

What I do is fill the primary (with the grape pack) to 6 gallons, and after 1 week remove the grape pack and top off with more water (about a quart, just guessing). Again, not all grape packs are created equal. The RJS dried skins are pretty small volume wise. The RJS Winery series are about a liter give or take. The Mosti Mondiale are much larger (and they aren't grape jelly goop, they are REAL skins from a winery press).

Jim, at first blush I really like this idea. It allows for the liquids in the grape pack to count as part of the 6 gallons and allowing the addition of much less water. Should give more body if it doesn't mess up the balance of the wine. As Mike stated most kit instructions do say to build to 23 ltrs before adding the grape pack. So they clearly want more water than you are adding. Now I'm very conflicted. :?

All I can say is that as long as I wind up with 6 gallons in primary before it's done, my wines are coming out great. I don't like to fill my primary with 23L of juice and then add the grape pack because I've had some of the fermentations foam up into the airlock. I also use a bag for the grape skins and squeeze them at least once a day, so after a week there's really not much point in leaving them in there anyway. It's a method that works really well for me.

If I'm not mistaken the first time I made an RJS WS kit with skins (Wash. Merlot) I overflowed (or nearly so) my carboy when racking from fermentation bucket to secondary. With the last two WS kits (a Super Tuscan and a Cab. Sav.) I fudged just a bit and did not fill with water all the way up to the 23L mark. Still ended up with a bit more than 23L to rack.

Just a follow up on this. I just start my Winery Series Grenache Syrah and it was 16L of Juice and 2L of grape skins. Same as the WE Sel Intl and Eclipse

cheers
