I'm getting ready to bottle my Pinot Grigio so I thought I'd better check the sulfite level. Based on the pH, I need to be around 32 mg/L. Knowing I had my shiny, new, Vinmetrica SC-100 for verification, I decided to try the Accuvin SO2 test kit to see what level it gave me. Comparing the vial to the color chart, I read it as being at least 40 ppm (maybe more). A little high, but acceptable to me. I even had my wife give me her interpretation. She agreed.
I then set up the Vinmetrica SO2 tester and proceeded with the test. My result was a reading of 20 ppm. This result was 12 ppm lower than what I need to protect the wine.
The bottom line is that the Accuvin led me to believe that everything was okay, when, in actuality, it was not.
