I'm planting about 20 vines in the backyard. 10 of them are the American type, Concord seeded and several table grapes, for fresh eating and juice.

Then I can plant another 10 vines, thinking wine grapes. Should I grow several varieties or I should carefully pick up one variety and plant 10 vines the same variety? The wine grapes are not for fresh eating, but for home wine, experimenting, etc....

you require 12-15 lbs of grape for each gallon of wine. a proper growing grape vine will yield 8-10 lbs of grapes. you can raise this amount but you will shorten the life of the vine. You can also make wine out of the Concord if you have a good crop.

I think it is better to limit the varieties, like two or so. Then we'll still get some flavors, like red and white. And we do not have so many varieties to manage. This is not like annuals where we can try many different grapes each year.
