CanI just put the hydrometer in there to test the SG of the wine?

I do I need a testing tube of some sort?

Thanks.

That what I do, others use a test jar. As long as you can see that it si floating straight and not stuck to the side of the thief. When you put the hydrometer in the thief, spin it to eliminate air bubbles. After getting a measurement, jiggle it a bit to make sure you are getting a true reading. Ill push it down and check 2 or 3 times to be sure but its still easier than cleaning a bunch of equipment.

Wade is correct. Theoretically you should fill your test jar to the top and read the hydrometer over the top of the jar to get a good accurate reading. It can be tough when the jar is half full and you are trying to look through solids and the such. I have the combo you speak of and I like it as you can put your sample right back into the must but have been thinking of getting a regular test jar like the one I have seen Waldo use.

I use this device for all my SG testing and it is quick and easy but can get tricky since the small diameter tends to lead to the hydrometer sticking to one side. I find that filling it to the top helps especially if you have any foam in the must to get an accurate reading.

yep yep, when making the kit i used the thief to test in and it worked great. Thanks guys.
