I'm guessing that guy is making wine from a kit? Some kit makers love bentonite before starting fermentation. Others don't, and some winemakers use it later, others don't use it at all.

Tell your buddy that if he lets the wine stabilize and clear for longer, nobody will be the wiser, even those who hold the budgetary approval.
