Ph meter storage

Do I have to use actual storage solution or can 4.0 solution be used. Trying to cut costs if it's unnecessary. I've seen posts on Google search that show both ways. If 4.0 can be used is there anything negative against it? I posted on a FB group and got no answers. Seems like I hardly get any responses on there so I thought I would try here. Thx.

Any solution that is less than saturated KCl will probably shorten the probe life, pH 4 is often suggested as a substitute for short duration. I use the storage solution, but I often forget about replenishing it and it ends up drying out, even so I've had no problems. See past thread.
