I've managed to locate a used wine press, No. 50. It is only 2 years old.
Should I be concerned about used equipment especially since the staves are
made out of wood? Specifically bacteria? I mention this because I've heard the horror stories about used oak barrels.

Your thoughts are greatly appreciated!

I believe that there is always a way to sanitize properly prior to using it.
I am not a specialist in this area - but there are many others that have alot more experience than me in this area.

I think I would give it a good power washing, perhaps a light sanding and several applications of a strong k-meta solution and then let it dry in the sun if possible. Heck, in Europe those things sit in the town square all year long until harvest and then are used without apparent harm.

Wash it good with a good cleaner then sanitize. I like Rockies idea of a light sanding if it needs refinished. However just like I wouldn't use a power washer on my deck I would not use it on the wood of a press basket. The other parts, yes. A power washer opens the grain of the wood and pushes the mold and bacteria deeper into it. Without pictures and more information it is hard to give you a definitive answer.

Personally, I wouldn't worry about it at all. My press was 10-15 years old when I bought it and some of the old finish is worn. Just sanitize it and use it. Be careful around the bolt holes as that's the only real potential for harboring anything. You're going to put some SO2 in anyway (I assume) and it should take care of the small stuff.

Should you see a lot of old residue, the previous owner didn't clean it well after use. If that's the case, it will need more cleaning and sanitizing than if it is visually quite clean.

thanks for the input. All great feedback! I will be inspecting the wine press this week. I will have pics to post!
