I'm very new at wine making and have run into a few obstacles already. I ordered some 5 gal glass carboys and all of them were cracked on the bottom. The company that I purchased them from said they were not cracked they were made that way. They replaced them and the replacements look the same way. They're definitely cracked! Is this normal for the 5 gal carboys?

Cracked and glass are never good when used in the same sentence. Is it a parting line or is the glass actually cracked?

This is what a cracked carboy looks like:

This was my fault - I was cleaning it and probably used water that was a bit too hot. Rinsing with cold water afterwards, I heard an ominous cracking sound and this was the result. Now I just have to figure out how to safely break it down to put in the trash...

Send them back for a refund! You will put so much of your time and effort into making a great wine only to be concerned about the integrity of the storage containers. That's a great video. The best part is that it shows an easy way to actually see weak spots in your carboys. Since I have a polarizing lens and an LED tv already, I think I'll just double check my carboys.

I just had a 5 gallon crack on the bottom as well. Luckily I got the wine out before it was too late.
After watching the video above I confirmed the carboy was not Italian. I am going through my carboys now and get rid of anything with imperfections, anything that is not Italian or from old water coolers.
