The directions on my wine kit say to bottle the wine (which I've done), then let the bottles sit upright for 3 days, then lay the bottles on their side for long-term storage.

I don't have a wine rack yet, so I was wondering if it would be OK to just leave the bottles upright for long-term storage. Would this somehow prevent the corks from completely sealing properly?

It depends on the cork used. Natural corks need to be layed down so they don't dry out and leak. The agglomerated corks do OK staying upright. If you have a wine bottle box- put the bottles in it, close the flaps and lay on it's side for an inexpensive temporary rack. Don't stack partially empty boxes as they can collapse.

I would figure out a way to lay them over somehow, you dont want those corks drying out.

Turn the bottles upside down in the box. Works for me. I don't lay them on the side till they go on my racks.
