I've read that experienced and/or professionals are more likely to get killed in various activities as they get over confident, fail to take basic precautions, and/or take unnecessary risks.

Many years ago, when I was working at the local coal mine, a Deputy (Foreman) who was supposed to check for gas to make sure it was safe to work, wandered off down an old unused drift and never came back. Who knows why, but a sad end!
