Hi

Just racked from primary to secondary. I filled my primary to the
inside ridge as per instructions. Let it go thru fermentation and
then this morning drained into glass carboy. I thought that the
carboy was a 6 gallon bottle but as you can see it left it a little
lower than it should be. I have another empty bottle and checked
the capacity and it measures 7 gallons.!!! hummmmmmmmmm. Question
- what should I do? Rack it into a 5 gallon and a 1 gallon bottle
or top off with water or other wine? This is a WE Selection
Gewurztraminer. I believe that I probably should wait to do
anything but just do not know? help please.

thanx

What size are all those in the background? If you have a 5 and a 1 I would go with that. The water will weaken the flavor and body.

Thanx for the comeback Appleman. I think that would be the best to do too.

Hummmmmmmmmmm - did not realize that these were larger bottles than I
thought. A friend of mine is going to give me some syrah and
merlot juice later in the year so I guess that I will use these for
them. All of the other bottles that you see are 5's. I have
5/5's and 2/7's. Guess I am going to have to fine some more
1's. Hey ho - fedex just pulled in and I bet he has my other kits
!!!!! I ordered a riesling - a cab - and the Amarone. Fun a
comin'.

Thanx again

You must have some ( 6 Imperial gallon carboys) which are approx. 7 U.S
gallons although my W.E Symphony only made it up to the same level in a
U.S. 6 gallon carboy which has happened once before and after
fermentation was done I racked and stabilized in a 5 gallon crboy and a
750ml bottle. After clearing I will only have 5 gallons. Has this
happened tp anyone else?

Wade, it happens to me all the time. Perhaps it's not needed, I think I let to much stay with the lees and get dumped versus racking some lees with every rack and just rack it a couple more times. But whatever the reason, I'm OK with it, as long as I don't have to thin the wine with water. Fortunately, I have enough variety of kits under my belt now and on the wine rack that when I think of it I can top up with like kind wine.

PS: My wife and I bottled 170 bottles this weekend and still have 12 gallons to go with 3 more fermenting now.

Only problem is that I transferred almost every drop from primary. SG
was low already at beginning and was at 6 gal. level. Oh well.
