OK so I think I made a mistake.

As a newbie trying first ever home made wine I brought for cleaning purpose a Dettol spray. I sprayed everything including my hands and I then washed everything with water and let it dry.

When it all dried, I started primary fermentation steps.

What can possibly went wrong? Anybody?

For everyone else: I just googled "Dettol." It is an antibacterial household cleaner.

For xyz: I am not sure what the likely outcome is. My guess is that you will get away with this, but that you should procure a sanitizing solution that is meant for winemaking before taking your next steps.

I am not familiar with the product on a first hand basis but from what I have read about it, I would be concerned. It all depends on how well the equipment and your hands were washed and cleansed of the product. According to what is on the net, the product is toxic if ingested. That would be very concerning to me.

What have you made? A kit, wine from juice, grapes or other fruit? Personally, I would error on the side of caution and dump everything but that is up to you. In the future, there are a number of very good cleaners and sanitizers. I use a dish soap for cleaning (Dawn) and Potassium Metabisulfite solution for sanitizing. There are other specific cleaning products but I find that Dawn works fine and rinses completely.

Non-soap cleaning still the best in my book. Hot water wash followed by sanitizer.

XYZed: can you get Oxi-Clean Free?

Not ideal, but may be able to be used as a sanitizer:

It is basically the same as this: http://www.northernbrewer.com/one-step

Sour_grapes: Actually I misunderstood sanitation concept, took it in hurry from local store. Now that I read boiling up equipment in water will do the job as well. See here:http://www.grapestompers.com/sanitation.aspx

I am not sure about Oxi-Clean but I would search for it definitely.

Rocky: I am making from RAUCH 100% red grape juice available in market. Actually it's more like a prototype so I just put 1.5 ltrs juice in 1.7 ltrs bottle with activated instant yeast (I couldn't get brewery products here in Middle East) to see how things go. This juice normally has 15.8% sugar so I didn't put normal sugar guess it's fine or better you advise.

I have also attached Dettol pictures with MSDS link in case anyone needs to study or further investigation. Here is link: http://www.rb-msds.com.au/uploadedFiles/pdf/Dettol Surface Cleanser-v5-D0300125.pdf

For sure I am never gonna use it but now since it's in secondary fermentation after successful (I believe) primary fermentation so I would let it finish.

Any more comments are welcome.

Oops... detol is very bad. The smell and taste could come to the wine

Pls use boiling water to clean if you could not get anything else.

I use boiling water and kmeta with some citrus to increase the effect. Also do not use bleach.
