Im pretty sure all the better bottles are the same but have never tried
the water bottles you speak of but know that anything plastic is not as
good as glass as it will scratch upon a good cleaning and will nearly
impossible to get in their to clean any scratches from carboy brushes
effectively and those scratches can harbor bacteria. Im not insulting
your carboys, I just know that after fermenting some fruit wines, there
will be some serious sediment that is hard to clean without using a
sturdy brush that is abrasive and will wear at any plastic container
and that is why you eventually have to replace your fermentation
buckets and those are a lot easier to clean without abrasive materials
as you just take the lid off. Glass pretty much lasts forever for a few
more bucks.

All good points, but with my back, weight is most important. I use lots of sterilizer in them first. Besides, I like the blue bottles for red wines-don't have to cover them.

Those are also good points Bruce and I know what you mean about your
back as I bulged 2 discs early last year and was out of commision for a
few months.

Lisa,

Welcome to the best forum on the net. I am a newbie too and have tapped
into the knowledge, helpfulness, and friendliness of this group and
enjoy a forum visit almost every day.

There is one thing more to say about carboys. Get glass and get a
couple extra. There is real pleasure in viewing the color and clarity
changes as you go through the steps. You can't see that as well(or at
all) with plastic. Have to say I have four kits in carboys now and
enjoy the ocassional color and clarity checks. Each one is unique.

OMG......you are asking the same questions as myself!! I am doing the research, like this website of the all the rest, and am not sure what kit or wine to start with.

Good luck on your kit. Maybe we can share tips of the trade or horror stories of the process. haha
