Excessive cane dieback

We had a very dry summer in SW VA then the rains in mid fall prompted new growth. Like the mid-west we got cold temps in very short order. ALL the new growth died; all was pruned off but that may have been your issue. I noticed quite a few grey canes on my vines but most had green cores and everything is breaking bud.

I think you're right, the core was green at pruning and buds are swelling nicely.

I was confused as to the age of the canes since they were grey. I say we call it weather related.
