I purchased a bottle of Yeast Nutrient last year for making fresh fruit wine and when I opened the bottle this year to make some more fresh fruit wine, the content of the yeast nutrient was a strongammonia-like odor. I don't recall the smell of the yeast nutrient from last year, so I threw the bottle away. Does anyone know what causes this to happen, should I be storing this a certain way and is there an expiration date on this stuff which I am not aware of (there is no expiration date listed on the bottle). An information that can be provided would be appreciated.

Thanks.

JD, Some yeast nutrients contain Ammonia Salts. This may account for the smell.Nutrients such as DAP, Fermaid K,Yeastex or Superfood contain ammonia salts.

It's best to get new supplies each season to avoid potential problems. Sounds like you did the right thing by tossing it out.
