Could someone please tell me what is meant by Chianti or Valpolicella style

It means that the wine will be like those wines but that the grapes used may not be exactly those used in the proper commercial wine.

The Italians are much like the French when it comes to rules governing grape growing and wine making. They have their DOC — Denominazione di Origine Controllata (controlled designation of origin). If it wasn't grown in that region using the specific varietals from that region you can't legally call it this or that.

Kit makers get around all the legalese by saying its a wine made in the XXXXX style.....

Thanks both for replying.

Mike, I thought it might be something like that and you confirmed it.

Balsamico di Modena, Feta, Champagne etc. come to mind.

Thanks again.
