vine between posts or next to post?

I'm no expert, but I'm awake, drunk and have nothing else to entertain myself, therefore here's my 2 cents. I planted my vines two summers ago an planted each vine next to a post so they had something to cling to, so they would grow somewhat straight up and latch on to my trellis system. If there is nothing solid for them to climb they will go all over the place.
 
Vines usually are planted between the posts. For training purposes you can use bamboo to help support the vines for the first few years. Once their up on the trellis wires additional trunk support isn't really necessary.
 
I Agree, between post is what I see in most vineyards around here.
 
Between posts. If you ever need to replace a post you are less likely to damage the vine/roots.
