I started my Chardonnay/Semillon kit last night. I definitely
know a lot more now than when I started my first kit in December.
Many thanks to those that have answered questions for me on this forum

It's a nice place here and I have also taken a look at the online
catalog and may be doing my future wine kit and equipment purchases
right here.

anyway, i do have a question as well, of course <G>

The original gravity of the must was 1.76 at 75 degrees. So it
was probably closer to 1.080 after adjusting for temperature.
This is at the low, in fact bottom end of the range given in the
instructions. I had exactly 6 gallons in the fermenter, 4 gallons
came from the juice and I had 2 gallon jugs of poland spring water that
I added.

Anyone know if this kit is supposed to be this low, gravity wise?

Thanks,

Jorma

Our kits seem to have started out on the low side of the numbers as well.Im guessing they give you that range because they made the kits fora certain ABV at the end, any higher would give you more alcohol the the kit was designed for. Also, at stabilization, our kits seem to ferment out to a drier(lower) reading than the kit states. You can always add alittle sugar in the primary ,before adding the yeast, to bring the SG up to where you want it.

Dont worry about it it will turn out fine.

Do you use a drill mounted stirrer as It really has to be mixed up good
and try to draw a sample from the middle of the must level as if not
mixed enough the water will tend to sit on top. Try taking another
reading down deep and see if its different right now. I bet you get a
hgher reading although if its within range its fine.

Yes the electric drill never though I would use one so much strirring and de gassing what an arm saver.

I used one and mixed it up very well indeed. But the SG was on
the low side. I was mainly curious if it was by design to be on
low side. In other words, the style of wine dictated that.

BTW, it is fermenting away nicely right now, smells great
