Welcome to the forum R.E.T. I would not recommend the plastic
water bottle for aging unless it is from a wine shop. They have plastic
fermenters called Better Bottles that are of a much higher quality
plastic which does not breeth or give off a plstic flavor as Im sure
you have tasted drinking out of a water cooler. As for blowing the
batch of wine youll be alright but I would definetly rack to a Better
bottle or glass carboy as soon as possible to get it off the sediment
at the bottom of the fermenter. This way you wont get an off flavor and
the wine will clear alot faster. Good Luck, and do tell us how
everything is going. You have come to the right place as I have been to
other forums and this is the best. Tell your son he did a good job and
dont be afraid to ask any questions here.

Welcome to a great forum. I to am up in age I will be 69 in November and love making wine.

Welcome R.E.T.
Heed wade's advice and all will go well. Look forward to your participation on the forum.

Welcome R.E.T.

Ditto what Wadewade said. Get the must into a glass bell jar (carboy) to keep the oxygen out.

My (late) Granpa in law started using a computer age 82 to do geneology. It's never too late.

Welcome RET!

PeterCooper is right - it's never too late to start using a computer. The more you practice (post online

) the more you will be comfortable using the computer. My mom learned, my dad learned and I'm even trying to get my uncle (close to 70) to use a computer.

We are thrilled to have you online, and a part of this forum.

You didn't blow it at all. :) You just need to rack it off the sediment that forms at the bottom about once a month (so the sediment doesn't start to rot and give bad odors and taste) or when you see about an inch of sediment at the bottom.

As to the plastic PET bottles, I wouldn't. I'd spend the $$$ and get a glass carboy.

:)

Welcome again!

THANKS FOR YOUR RESPONSES. I AM USING A WINESHOP 7 GALLON PLASTIC FERMENTING CONTAINER AND WILL USE A 5 GALLON CARBOY WHEN I RACK. THANKS, THAT'S ALL FOR NOW. WILL HAVE MORE QUESTIONS LATER I'M SURE.

We're glad to hear that yo bought a carboy. You will not be
disappointed.. Your wine will thank you and anyone you give wine to
will thank you, if by any chance a bottle or two makes it out of your
hands!
