At room temp (approx 78 f) my hydrometer is reading 1.0002.

Looking at the temp adjustments I thought that was fine but by adding
hot water I see it should be .002 off in the other direction and read
.998

So I think my device is "off".

Either way my initial SG reading is 1.100.....now considering my
calibration is off by +2 and it should be reading -2 at this temp I am
getting actual readings......I think.

With all of the above would you add water before the yeast or not?

I think I figured it out.

First I had to remember how to add and subtract<!--[if gte vml 1]>

After that I tested at 60f and the bottom line is my hydrometer seems to be off
by +4.

Recalibrating for that my SG is 1.096....a little water with the yeast and I'm
calling that close enough.

I didn't notice any talk about calibrating these things did I get a goofy one?

The hydrometer will get you close enough. They do vary slightly and the variance is not enough to worry about.
