Anyone ever have an issue with a wine thief chipping off into a carboy full of fermenting wine? I'm planning on filtering it (it's a bigger chip). Any other suggestions?

I tipped a glass thief when bringing it out of a carboy full of bulk-aging wine only to have found the end broken off in multiple pieces on the end due to my carelessness at tipping it too early and causing shearing stress on the glass.

Racking with an autosiphon produced no glass into the new carboy and all of the pieces were left behind in the liquid that wasn't touched thanks to the auto-siphon's sediment tip.

A filter will easily catch a glass chip. Just be sure to verify that you find the chip (should not be hard with a filter).
