Heat gun versus boiling water to seal shrink caps

I've also seen people have success using an embossing gun that can be found at any craft store like Hobby Lobby or Michael's. Probably similar results as the heat gun, but a little more compact.

Heat gun versus boiling water to seal shrink caps

Heat gun works better than boiling water, but I have found that a steamer works best for me. I use a steamer to press my dress clothes, so I already had one on hand.

Dragon Blood: Triple Berry Skeeter Pee

James, Where do you buy it at by the case? I just used up the last of my Sparkolloid and just ordered some Super-Kleer to try out.

Strange Haze! What is this ?

I would agree that it looks like the sediment hasn't settled yet. My blackberry looks just like that when clearing.

White stuff in the bottom and sides of carboy

This is just your gross lees (dead yeast, grape skins, ect.) that is falling to the bottom. It sometimes collects along the sides of the carboy, but will eventually all make its way to the bottom. Sometimes I find it falls faster (off of the sides) if you tap the sides or shake the carboy...

St. James Winery (St. James, MO)

We also enjoyed meeting everyone! You guys laughed at my duct taped brute trash can/lid, but I'd like for you to know that I didn't lose any juice on the way home. Keep me on the list for next year. :b

St. James Winery (St. James, MO)

I really just need to convince my wife that we need more carboys....lol. I really only have enough to do 12 gallons at one time (without having to bottle a couple of kits prematurely). What would be the minimum that i could do without being too inconvenient for everyone else?

St. James Winery (St. James, MO)

I as thinking of getting 20-24 gallons, but don't have the equipment for doing it all at once. Would 5/6 gallon buckets work for picking it up? Could they then be stored in a refrigerator until I am ready for it? Thanks for the help!

St. James Winery (St. James, MO)

I've got a few more questions before I can say yes or no. How do you pick it up? What type of containers will I need to get in order to safely transport it back home? Can I store it and make smaller batches at a time? If so, what is the best way to store it? Thanks for the help!

I may also be interested in going in on this. When do they need to have the contract? Also, do they provide stats on the juice (pH, etc.)?

    First bottles!

I wish that I could say that I did. The image is being used by several people. I did get permission from the photographer to use it, though :D. Not sure on which "pair" was being discussed :)

    First bottles!

Here are the labels for the two. I wanted them to look like something that you could purchase from a store. I think it adds that little bit of "commercial" look to them and makes them stand out from other homemade wines that most of my family and friends have experienced (you know, the ones...

    First bottles!

I finally had some time this weekend and decided to bottle a Moscato Kit and Blackberry that I started from Jam. Both had been bulk aging and could have keep on aging, but I was in need of the carboys (I have two more kits and Skeeter Pee started). I guess the addiction has set in :D...

    Other Backsweeting question

Thanks, Wade. This just confirms what I was thinking. :b

    Other Backsweeting question

I have a quick question. I have a moscato kit that I followed the directions to completions. In stead of bottling (because I didn't have time), I just racked it into a sterile carboy for bulk aging. The kit included Kieselsol and Chitosan (I assume for clearing) and gave directions for...

    Wine Bottles

You can cork them. However, the necks on the screw cap style are thinner glass than corked bottles. Because of this, you always run the risk of them chipping/breaking. There is also a new closure that is made for the screw cap style. I forget, though, what they are called. I try to just use...

    Wine Filters

Wade, I tried searching the forum for IBGLowin's post regarding the increased sulfite levels when using these filters, but didn't have any luck. Since I am just starting off and using kits, it sounds like it would just be easier to just freeze the filters afterwards. Can you help explain...

    Wine Filters

Thanks Wade! Do you filter with both the 5 micron and the 1 micron filters? Or do you use one for reds and the other for whites? I can remember a conversation with one of the wine makers here in Missouri and he just used the "coarse" pads (which I think is a 6 micron) in the buon vino...

    Wine Filters

From the pictures that I've seen, everyone seems to have the whole house filter that is clear. Is it safe to buy the opaque (non-see-through) one that is less expensive, or are the benefits of seeing the wine in the filter worth the extra costs? Thanks for the tips/help.
