Quality Carboys, Bottles & a Port Kit - North Chicago Area

Taking a hiatus from winemaking for a while (ok, I've been on hiatus for over a year). Really good bargain, I think: (3) 6 Gallon glass carboys (2) 5 Gallon glass carboys (2) 3 Gallon glass carboys All of the carboys are the "good ones" no cheapies. (7) Cases (84 bottles) of clean...

WineXpert Two different yeast packs in one kit

Just opened up a Winexpert Eclipse Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc kit. They included two packages of yeast, one is EC-1118 and the other is K1-V1116. This is the first time I've seen this, and both are 5g, so this is twice as much yeast as I've seen in my other kits as well. Has anybody else...

    Bottling temperature

I have a WE Italian Pinot Grigio in cold stabilization (around 30 degress F), and thinking of bottling direct from the carboy in the fridge. Any thoughts on pros/cons of doing this? Does it matter what temp the wine is (within reason) when bottling :?

Winemaking room ... what do I need?

Hi all, Just moved from Seattle to the Chicago area, and starting to get back to making wine. The house we bought has a large unfinished basement, and we're getting ready to hire a designer and contractor to build it out with a bar, bathroom, exercise room, theater room, and .... a...

    Removable Labels - best yet!

Ran out of my Avery 5164 labels, so went to Office Depot to pickup another package yesterday, as I just bottled a Cab. They had a Post-it brand label that is removable, in the same size as the Avery 5164. I took a chance and bought them. I printed one sheet of labels, and tried them when I...

    WineXpert Selection International Italian Amarone

Did some searching to see if anybody had made this one yet, but didn't find any threads. I just put it into primary today. Comes with 3 packages of hungarian oak powder and a bag of grape skins. Also 2 sizable bags of dextrose for chaptalization after the first 5 to 7 days. Given the...

First batch bottled: Thanks for the help!

My son was home for the weekend with a friend, so I had some help in moving things around, cleanup, etc., so took the opportunity to bottle my first batch of wine. It's a CC Old Vine Zin, a 5 week kit that I stretched out to 10 weeks. Some things I learned from this forum that surely helped...

1st Kit - Getting very close!

Started my first kit in early January, and have been 'reasonably' patient thus far. It is a 5 week CC Lodi Old Vine Zin, and it's now in its 9th week. So, about an extra 4 weeks of bulk aging so far. I'm still going to wait at least another week or two before bottling, but I stole a 1/2 glass...

WineXpert Limited Edition South African Sauv. Blanc/Semillon

Anybody try this? Any insights? I just picked this up at my local HBS, but it will be a few weeks before I get to start, so thought I'd get any thoughts or pointers before I get going. Thanks.

    Rack before bulk aging?

Finished my first kit today, a CC Lodi Old Vine Zin. Racked it to a clean carboy, and added the stabilization and fining agents per the instructions. It is now resting comfortably in the carboy to clear and then rest a while. I had lots of questions and got lots of answers here along the way...

    Not going below 1.000

Looking for advice... My first kit, a CC Lodi Old Vine Zin with grape pack. Went through primary with starting SG=1.081, and SG=1.000 when I racked it to a carboy for secondary, and added the enzyme pouch per instructions. That was day 8. So today is day 21, and just checked the SG, and it...

    Topping up with water

I keep reading about using a similar wine to top up a carboy, or adding marbles or beads to fill the volume. Here's an interesting post from WineExpert that suggests that water is not only ok to use, but is the basis of the kit contents. Interesting...

    Checking SG in secondary

Cellar Craft old vine zin. Racked to secondary at 1.000 SG two days ago. Quick question: how frequently should I be checking the SG, and should I worry about 'breaking the seal' and allowing oxygen in if I check it on a daily basis?

Cellar Craft Lodi Old Vine Zin - I think I broke it.

ok, so my first ever attempt at making wine. Got off to a good start, with active primary. SG started at 1.081, Day 4: 1.050, Day 5: 1.026, Day 6: 1.020 (morning), Than I had to go out of town for the long weekend, so I left it in primary under airlock, at about 73 degrees. Got home...

    Unexpected travel

ok, first official post (other than my intro a few weeks ago). I've been doing a lot of reading, and worked up the courage to start my first batch, a CC Old Vine Zinfandel kit. It's a kit that includes a packet of crushed grapes, which are in the mesh bag in the must. Started it on Sunday...

    Hello from Newcastle, WA

Hello folks, I just got a beginner's kit from my lovely bride for Christmas, and greatly looking forward to wading into this hobby! Thought I do some reading online before starting my journey. I tend to dive deep into any hobby I start, so want to take the time to learn for a while...
