BTW, as a test, I planted a bunch of different varieties here last summer to see if they would survive a zone 4 winter. I planted Chardonnay, Cab Sauv., Cab Franc, Merlot, Regent, Zweigelt, Chancellor, Dornfelder, Zinfandel, Syrah, and a few others. In addition to these, my future wine grapes are Petite Pearl, Marquette, Ives, Landot Noir, and Marechal Foch.
They ALL survived -28F, although the vinifera vines above the snow line were dead, but the roots and covered areas appear to have survived just fine. They are nice and green where I pruned them back. It would be nice to produce some grapes from some of these varieties, but probably wouldn't have enough time to ripen here. I may try putting some on a low wire trellis and then covering them with leaves and snow to see if the vines will make it through.
