question about hydrometer

when checking with a hydrometer and you put your sample in a test jar to check, do you pour back the sample wine or throw it out??t

As long as you sanitize the test vessel and the hydrometer first, I'd keep the wine.

When I sample in the test tube, I make sure it is well sanitized along with the hydrometer and wine thief/turkey baster. That way I put it back in. The samples can add up and before you know it, you are short wine. If I have extra at racking and want to sample, I sample it in my mouth after getting test results.
