oak spiral

I'm going to add a couple of oak spirals to my DB batch. The package reads to let it sit for 6 weeks for full effect. I was thinking of adding after I clear the wine but wanted to see what anyone else has done. The wine is currently fermenting. Also, do you think I should put it in a mesh bag for easy retrieval or should I just drop them in carboy and rack after the 6 weeks. Thanks.

wait until wine clears. I used to tie a fishing line to the top of oak spiral and insert into carboy. the fishing line is thin enough that you can still use a airlock. I suggest you taste wine after three weeks of oak spiral to make sure it does not get to much oak.
