You may have to have been in the Service to appreciate this one, but it is one of my favorites.

A young recruit was standing his first watch on guard duty on a dreary and rainy night. As he walked his post, he noticed a form in the darkness and challenged, "Halt! Who is there?"

"The base commander, General Connor," came thereply.

The recruit thought, 'Oh yeah, sure. The base commander would be out on a night like this,' so he said, "Well, I'll tell you what General, how about putting your ID card on the ground, backing off 10 paces and coming to attention." The form complied.

The recruit walked over, picked up the ID card and shined his flashlight on it. Sure enough, it was General Connor! The recruit was rattled and unsure of what to do next. A few minutes of silence passed as the soldier stood there trembling and the General bellowed, "Soldier! Are you going to have me standing here at attention all night?!"

"N-n-n-no, S-s-sir," stuttered the shaken recruit,"Pa-r-a-a-a-a-de, Rest!"
