I know currants & raisins are one of the popular adders for some low end wine kits.

I decided to actually check the ingredients whole at the store for some currants and raisins.

Many (most) have oil, of some kind, added to them. Very few call out any sulfates.

Is the oil a concern at all?

Locally: currants are very difficult to find and the only ones I can find have oil added.

I think that the oil is a bit of a concern, it can go rancid or coat equipment and stuff. when I have used dried fruit that had oil on it I just let the fruit soak in water overnight, and then rinsed well before use. Seemed to work. I think if you were pressed for time you could just rinse really well before use. Not sure if this is for sure necessary, but it's what I have done.

Good point. Thanks. I was thinking a boiling water rinse but an extended soak may do better.
