A good year for grapes

ALBANY (AP)—It’s been a good year for growing grapes in New York, where the annual harvest is expected to be up 7 percent over last year’s.

The U. S. Department of Agriculture says vineyards are forecast to yield 188,000 thousand tons, up from 176,000 in 2010.

Some growers in the Lake Erie region reported reduced yields because of the wet spring and dry summer, but most said it was a good growing season.

The Finger Lakes vineyards also re-ported a good season, but Long Island growers were hurt by the hot, dry summer and damage from Tropical Storm Irene.

Nationally, the USDA says just more than 7 million tons will be harvested, down 4 percent from 2010.

Good to see. I got to taste a bunch of the fingerlakes 2010's and they are on the path to being excellent. If 2011 is just as good,,,,gonna be a couple more wine tours on the calendar for me:d
