    Tank modification

Just a suggestion, when you find the right welding shop, explain to them what you're using the tank for and offer them first "rights of refusal" on a few bottles from that modified tank's first batch. May help defray the fabrication cost.🍷

    Bottling!

I too am trying not to be a crotchety "get off my lawn" old guy. I agree with ibglowin; stream some good tunes while you're filling, and as winemaker81 suggests, work with someone you can talk to. You can solve the world's problems as you bottle! Goes pretty quickly. Doing some prework...

The "Happy Fall Y'all" bottles of wine bottles were thank you gifts at Halloween for the adults in our immediate neighborhood that keep me supplied with their empty wine bottles all year long! ♻️

What is the CORRECT way to displace ambient air from headspace ?

From a "not connected to winemaking" background, (pharmaceutical manufacturing), most of the bulk raw material storage tanks, work in process and finished goods liquids that had atmospheric sensitivity were inert gas purged and blanketed continuously. The main gas we used was nitrogen...

    Cost of Goods - Winemaking

Thanks for this. Yes, my Chairperson is consuming inventory too, as well as giving away, and purchasing, which is all fine. To your point and Jim's above, part of what I was trying to get to with the cost; what does "make vs. buy" really look like for what we enjoy.

    Cost of Goods - Winemaking

Same for us (home winemaking). Just seems like we're making more batches and moving to bigger batches this year so wanted to get a handle on cost going forward so that I can explain it to "The House Appropriations Committee". ;)

    Cost of Goods - Winemaking

Has anyone seen or developed a shareable Excel spreadsheet template that tracks cost of goods for winemaking, from batch inception through primary and secondary packaging, inclusive of materials, labor, & overhead? Apologies in advance if this exists here already, I did the "Search first!"...

Nice chronologic progression. I've always been a Fred Gwynne fan!

These all look great, especially the one above! Winemaker81 has very good point in that the label somewhat has to coordinate with the wine and/or bottle color. I'm terrible at visualizing this stuff, so I print out the label on plain paper and make a "mock up" on a filled bottle. I also pick...

Looks good, nice and clean! If you add a deep red into it somewhere or change the font or logo color to a red, a little contrast may move it away from the "headstoney" genre!

I just bottled a similar Skeeter pee as well. I can send you the native format file to play with for yours if you want. I use Avery Design and Print Online, template for Avery 22826 Labels to make gift bottles. I made two labels as the whole "Skeeter Pee" thing is not for everyone. Same wine...

How did you find our forum?

Found this forum on Google. We received a simple one-gallon wine making kit as a Christmas gift last year. The instructions that came with it were not great, and in our search for a little more clarity we found this site! Great answers to questions, simple answers for beginners like us, on up...

    First Time Bottling - HELP!

Batches turned out great. Thanks to everyone for your feedback! (I need to work on label placement, first bottle!)

    First Time Bottling - HELP!

Thanks for this, and the suggestion to salvage the wine+sediment, refrigerate and recover some of that makes great good sense! Hopefully Santa will bring me some 5 gallon capacity for 2022.

    First Time Bottling - HELP!

Apologies, the batch referenced above with sediment in the bottles is Elderbery: Adapted 5 gallon batch recipe to 1 gallon: 6 ounces dried elderberry 6 ounces raisins, rinsed soaked and minced, boiled in RO water. Water retained and transferred to main batch. 56 ounces welches grape juice to...

    First Time Bottling - HELP!

Hello - I finally got around to bottling the batch described above on 9/25/21, and it went well. The SG was .990 on 9/20, so back sweetened to 1.000, then followed the directions suggested above (added campden and sorbate). Looked at my notes, and I had it noted as clear, no sediment on 9/20...

    First Time Bottling - HELP!

Coming up on bottling a new batch of dried elderberry we made, and my wife wants to sweeten this batch to taste before bottling. If we follow convention and add the sorbate and the campden a few days in advance, will it affect the taste at the time we back sweeten?

Thank you for the responses! Followed the suggestions, everything seems fine as of this writing ;).

    First Time Bottling - HELP!

Hello Everyone! My wife and made our first one gallon "demonstration" batch of wine to see if we could even make a wine like substance back in mid-January of this year. So far things have gone well, due much in part to the knowledge base here that kept us from doing things we shouldn't, and...
