    Burnt rubber pee

I have two batches right now with the same issue. One is a red Pinot Noir and the other is a white Pinot Grigio. I believe that my mistake was not racking enough. Both have the rubber smell. What I am guessing is that I have Mercaptans in the advanced stage. I have spent many hours looking for a...

    Defective Bottle

After I posted this message I had a feeling that there is no correct answer. I hate returning things but I would sure hate losing a batch of wine because of the imperfection. My other bottles have a couple of small bubbles or blisters but not as large as this one. I am going to return it and be...

    Defective Bottle

I just purchase a 5 gallon carboy (new) and when I got it home I notice a large air bubble in the glass about 1/4" in diameter. I will be using a vacuum to pump my wine into it. Are these bubbles just part of the bottle or should I return the carboy? Daryl

    Lambrusco

Joe, My favorite wine is Lambrusco. I am new to wine making but I have drank Lambrusco off and on for years. I prefer the Canei to the Riuniti. It is a little dryer Lambrusco. I made a batch of Lambrusco from concentrate many years ago and left it ferment down to around .994. My brother, my...

    Bad mistake

Actually Debbie I have already called Luva Bella and asked if I could pick up a bucket of Pinot Grigio Saturday. They have it so here I go again. I might end up in a divorce over this wine making thing but look at the bright side. I will have lots of wine to drown my sorrows. Daryl

    Bad mistake

Just a follow up from Tuesdays question. I checked the SG tonight and it was .0993. I had a little extra in the wine thief so I poured it into a glass and tasted it. It had a lot of alcohol taste and a little bit bitter from the acid I guess. I did what Debbie said and added a little sugar to...

    Bad mistake

Mike, I think you are the closest. Since I'm new I don't have any wine ready yet but I do have a fridge full of beer. We can drink the stuff I have that's bubblin. Just have to add a little sugar like Debbie said. I drank after shave when I was 13 because it had alcohol in it. Everything...

    Bad mistake

Thanks Debbie, I couldn't stand it anymore so I just took a taste. It is still bubbling very good and it tastes like it has lots and lots of alcohol in it. I'm sure nobody on hear would like to taste anything like that. Hey it must not be that bad. I didn't have to spit it out like...

    Bad mistake

Okay, thank you all. You have all made me feel better. Yes, I will make sure I save all of you at least a bottle to try. What a great group of people I have had the pleasure of meeting here. I can't wait to meet all of you in person. Sounds like a fun time!!! Daryl

    Bad mistake

Okay, this one has been sitting bad with me since I started my wine from a juice kit. When I decided to make my wine, I took the lid off. I sanitized my plastic stirrer.with Easy Clean. I then rinsed the stirrer off with water which I read later that I didn't have to. Then I made the dumb...

    Malolactic fermentation

Mike & Julie, I purchased the Pinot Noir. It is in a 6 gallon bucket. The Luva Bella instructions that they give you say to stir and ferment. They didn't say anything about adjusting the acid, sugar, etc. I also talked to one of the guys that was bringing out the buckets and he told me that...

    Malolactic fermentation

Thanks Dan, now I know which direction I am going to go and that is not to do MLF. I think I might have ended up with something that I didn't want to drink. I can't imagine a wine with a fish taste. Sends chills down my spine. Daryl

    Malolactic fermentation

Maybe I am using the wrong terminology. I considered the juice that I picked up at Luva Bella as a kit wine since they have added everything to it before I purchased it. They told be that all I had to do is open and stir. Doesn't get much easier than that. Daryl

    Malolactic fermentation

I have been reading and reading about MLF. I am fermenting a Pinot Noir that I purchased from Luva Bella. It sounded like something that I wanted to do to make the best tasting wine I can. I have noticed that if you look at most articles about it they are not talking about doing a MLF with kit...

New and ready to make wine

Rob, Great to hear that you don't get the "try the search first on here" sometimes you search the wrong words and don't find what you are looking for. Sometimes you don't know what are the right words to search with. It always makes you feel bad when you get that "try the search reply" Yes...

New and ready to make wine

Mike, I have already started asking questions, downloading books (that someone suggested on here) I did make wine about 20 years ago and it turned out very good. There was a company called wine mart that my wife and I took classes from. Things have really changed since then. You are just...

New and ready to make wine

I haven't signed up for the classes at Luva Bella yet. I like to jump in, read, ask questions and hope things turn out right. Kind of like most of us that purchase something that needs put together. Who has time to read the instructions? So you end up with a couple extra parts. I like the...

New and ready to make wine

Hello everyone. I live in Petersburg Ohio. I am new to wine making but I am very excited to do something fun and challenging. My wife and I have been to the local winery the past two weeks and found it very enjoyable and relaxing. I started my first batch of pinot noir with the help of...
