I read the thread http://www.winemakingtalk.com/forum/f137/port-accident-48858/#post554195 . I probably put link in wrong, sorry.

I looked up Pearson Square in search and there were many threads that came up, but none that were easy to find, for me at least.

A, is the percent of alcohol in the liquor you're going to use (not the proof).
B, is the alcohol content of the wine you want to fortify.
C, is the ABV you want in the finished product.
D, equals C minus B, and gives you the proportion of liquor to use.
E, equals A minus C, or the proportion of basic wine you need.

Example being: A is 40 percent and B is 12 percent, and C is 20 percent.
Then D is 8 and E is 20.

I know the Pearson Square is out there, but I wrote this down from the book
The Joy Of HomeWineMaking by, Terry Garey. Page 214-215. Just in case the wording is familiar, I want to credit the author. It made it easy for me to write this. I hope this helps others who look it up on this site and had as much trouble as me in finding it easily.

Here's an example from my notes, from a time I helped someone here with this; this goes all the way from 'parts' to 'bottles'.

[FONT=&quot][FONT=&quot]B[/FONT] = Your wine, ABV 12%?
C = The ABV you want - 18%?

D = [FONT=&quot]Your wine [/FONT]by 'parts'
E = [FONT=&quot]Brandy[/FONT] by 'parts'
[/FONT]
[FONT=&quot][FONT=&quot][FONT=&quot]A[/FONT] - C = [FONT=&quot]E[/FONT]
[/FONT]C - [FONT=&quot]B[/FONT] = [FONT=&quot]D[/FONT]
[/FONT]
[FONT=&quot][FONT=&quot]40 - 18 = 22
[/FONT]18 - 12 = 6

[FONT=&quot]6[/FONT] parts brandy,[FONT=&quot] [/FONT][/FONT][FONT=&quot][FONT=&quot]22 parts wine[/FONT]

22 + 6 = 28 total parts
6/28 = 21.42% brandy
22/28 = 78.57% wine

78.57% = 6 gallons of wine
6 gallons x 5 bottles per gallon = 30

BottlesBrandy = [%Brandy * (BottlesWine / %Wine)]
Brandy = [21.42 * (30/78.57)]

8.17 bottles (fifths) of 40% brandy to reach 18% from 12%[/FONT]
