WineXpert Oak?

I've had oak chips before, but this Italian Amarone has a bag of what looks like dark sawdust. Is that the oak?

Yes it is the oak and the small particles will give the maximum extraction for the short time it is in the primary.

I have had a wine kit that had the sawdust oak also. Makes you feel a little strange when you add them feeling as if you just put dirt into your wine!

Yes thatis your Oak...The small pieces create a greater surface area so the end result is that more of the wine will be exposed to the surface of the Oak.. So for the short duration of the kit wines the oak is exposed long enough...
