Hi I want to ferment a 6 gallon kit and I have a 12 gallon bucket, is this too much space in risk of oxidation or will this be ok?

Go big or go home... Right?

Well I just got done with my taxes for the year and my return will be about $900. With that money my plan is to buy 4 carboys (3-5gallon and 1-6gallon) an 8 gallon fermenter, a straining bag, and a red mountain trio kit. All of this totals to about 400 dollars. My plan is to use the 6 gallon for...

    What a great Sunday!

Wow, I think today has been an all time high for my winemaking. I feel so accomplished! I found a vineyard about 20 miles away that sells U-Pick Cabernet grapes, and have talked to the owner who said he had a really good harvest this year, so tomorrow I'm going to go pick, wash, and crush my...

First bottle of wine made the right way!

Today I got to bottle my very first bottle of wine that I produced the right way. The only reason I actually bottled this way because I racked my 2- 1 gallon carboys into a 1 gallon carboy and a half gallon carboy because of the loss at the bottom where the lees sits. Here it is my first bottle...

Other What makes a kit good?

I'm still very new to winemaking but my first few batches have all been from fresh ripe fruit from a close friends vineyard. What makes a kit better than fresh fruit? How do you tell which kit to buy? There is no way for me to tell based on the description... They all sound great

    Degassing on a budget

Well today I learned how to effectively degas your wine fully for a very low cost, and thought I'd relay the information. After using a paddle made from a clothes hanger with a drill... This was a big step up, with up stepping up the cost. I bought a brake bleeding kit from Harbor Freights for...

    Degassing pump?

What is a good, affordable vacuum pump for degassing my wine? I don't have a whole ton of money nor do I make wine on a very big scale, but I'm sick of using a stirring rod with my drill!

    Wax sealing?

I have a pretty simple question about sealing bottles with wax, so when you cork a bottle, you need another 1/4 inch or so to pour the wax on, how do you push the cork down that 1/4 inch? Do you just use another cork through your corker or is there some special way to do it? Thanks!

    A true beginner

I've been on this forum for a few days now, and I must say the amount of knowledge I've already learned is so crazy. With all this newly learned stuff I've decided what I'm going to learn this year when it comes to winemaking. Unlike many of you I don't have my own house and not hardly enough...

    Acid Level Explanation please?

I've been reading a lot about wine making on this site and have made quite a few batches of home made wine and I have decided that the next step I need to learn is the acid levels. What is the best way to test this? PH strips? What is the Ideal PH of wine? How do you calculate how much acid/acid...
