    cleaning your carboy

Thanks. I am going to order the bigger brush. I am letting it soak for a couple of days, then hoping for an easy cleaning. I had a lot of fun with my first batch. It tasted pretty good (merlot) at bottling, and I am sure it will only be better with aging. I tried about half a glass about halfway...

    cleaning your carboy

I just finished my first kit, and I am having a problem getting down into the carboy to clean the sediment off of the sides. Anyone have any suggestions?

    WineXpert OK, another question

I did follow the directions as closely as possible, so I guess you could say I did it to a "T". The temp was around 75 degrees, and I know that is a little warm. I figured that might have made it ferment a little quicker. I just stirred it good and started clarifying, and it still looks and...

    WineXpert OK, another question

Thanks. I didn't think it would make a difference. I am going to leave it for two more days then degass probably on Tues. It did taste pretty good when I got a little in my mouth siphoning, and I will say it was much better already than I expected from a "kit" wine. And I do drink a fair amount...

    WineXpert OK, another question

I just racked my wine a couple of days ago into my carboy. It is a merlot, and I had it in the primary for six days. I had it sealed with an airlock in the primary. The starting sg was around 1.075. When I racked it over, it was around .996. It doesn't seem to be fermenting any more in the...

It is a Vinter's Reserve Merlot. It came with the basic equipment kit, which is what I am trying to make first.

    Need Member Photos!!

No, not at work in that one. I was out on the lake at 2 am with some friends. It had been a long night, to say the least. I do government work, and a lot of the people I work with do this. A friend just called to ask if he should use camden tabs or easy clean to sanitize. I said easy clean until...

Ok, I am posting my pic. I just started, and my batch is about four days old. It is fermenting good, and I look forward to my first batch. I have found this forum to be very helpful, so I am adding my pic. Thanks to all who have helped me start out right.

    Newbie question about hydrometer

This has gotten off topic, but I just ordered a Fizz-X stirrer. I get tired easily...

    Newbie question about hydrometer

Ok, got my primary going. I cleaned and sanitized well. I also bought a baster (sp?) and used it. My beginning sg is 1.075. I have it going right now. I talked to some friends, and my mix came with oak chips. It said put them in right before the yeast. I did, but wondered because everything I...

    Newbie question about hydrometer

I have a Vinter's Reserved Merlot. I bought a kit that comes with the bottles, corks, hand corker (I know, a friend and I are going to buy a floor model), a primary and secondary fermenter, tubing, 1 airlock (I will probably buy another), triple scale hydrometer, carboy brush, no rinse cleanser...

    Newbie question about hydrometer

That was what I had thought about doing. I am using a 7.5 gallon bucket as my primary. I have plenty of cleaner and camden tablets to clean with also. My friend told me he likes using the tablets better than the no rinse cleaner.

    Newbie question about hydrometer

I just got my wine making kit, and I have a question or two about my triple scale hydrometer. Do I need a wine theif and test jar, or can I just use a sanitized turkey baster and a tall jar or vase? I didn't get one, and I want to make good wine. I didn't know if I could do this or...
