In case anyone is interested, I got an email invitation that Gusmer is hosting a webinar on their OenoFoss spectroscopic analytical tool on July 23 at 10am pacific. This may be a little beyond the scope of many home winemakers on this forum but it is interesting to know what tools are out there and what analysis can be done on the juice/wine.

You can register here: Welcome! You are invited to join a webinar: The Value of Using OenoFoss™ Technology for Wine Analysis. After registering, you will receive a confirmation email about joining the webinar.

From their email:

Presentation Topics include:

- Features of the OenoFoss
- FTIR Technology
- Value of Ownership

This event offers a great opportunity for wineries currently considering starting a lab, bringing analysis in-house, or looking to upgrade to all-in-one instruments.

The webinar was pretty interesting. They are using an FTIR with mid-range IR (3-25um wavelength) to fingerprint the spectral absorption coefficients and then quantify the concentration of various compounds in a sample. The unit takes 2 minutes to run a sample and is capable of reporting glucose, fructose, VA, gluconic acid, ethanol, YAN, ammonia, malic, and tartaric. The base configuration also reports pH, TA, brix and runs $22k with the add-on modules running about $780. It can be used on must, fermenting wine, still wine and sweet wine (>2.5% sugar).
