    Freeze tonight

I'm in southwest michigan, just a hobby vineyard so no money lost at least. There's a lot of large vineyards nearby growing concord for welch's and grapes for St. Julian winery. Hopefully they were unaffected

    Freeze tonight

Well I wasn't able to protect the vines last night and from what I can tell about 50 percent of the shoots got fried pretty good. Marquette definitely took the worst of it, everything green is brown already. I guess we'll see what happens when it warms up this week, hopefully it's not as bad...

    Freeze tonight

Supposed to drop down to 30 tonight. My marquette, verona, petite pearl, traminette, even concord have all budded out. Some marquette shoots are 6 inches long already. Hope the weather man is wrong!

Does anyone use the fan training system?

Came across this video from Michigan state's viticulture program. I have all cold hardy grapes and have no need for this system. I'm curious though about trying to grow some vinifera with it. Hardier varieties like cab franc and riesling https://youtu.be/TtrMOUa7jzI

    Fermentation not starting

I have 12 gallons (2 buckets) of crushed Chancellor grape must. Saturday night I put a 1/4 teaspoon of sulfite in each bucket. Sunday night I pitched 71B Lavin yeast. I also added nutrient and energizer. 12 hours later nothing is happening. Do I need to wait longer? Brix was at 22, ph was...

    Question about mlf

I posted this in beginners forum but got no response. I have a six gallon batch of chancellor grapes I'm going to start on this weekend. I've never done mlf before but would like to try it this time. I do not have a chromatography (hope that's the right word) kit to test the progress of the...

    Question about mlf

New to winemaking, haven't tried mlf before. I'd like to try it on a 6 gal. batch of chancellor grapes I'm going to crush this weekend (after primary fermentation). However I don't have a chromatography kit and I'm not going to buy one for now. Anyway my homebrew store doesn't stock the...

    How many grapes to buy?

I'm going to pick up about 100lbs of chancellor grapes this weekend. I'm fairly new to wine making, done several kits and a couple small batches with my own grapes. Anyway the problem I forsee is ending up with 5 gallons of wine in a six gallon carboy. I've never really come across this issue...

    St. Vincent?

Greg, last night the wife and I went to Joe's for pizza and Plainwell ice cream after. The town is kind of run down in some areas but still some nice places left.

    St. Vincent?

Sounds good to me Bruce, although it'll take me some time for my vines to catch up. I've got 10 acres that was also corn/bean field. There's 20 inches of nice sandy topsoil, then a layer of stone from all the years of tilling. All my vines are young and growing well, hope that stone layer...

    St. Vincent?

Just ordered more vines from Double A for next spring, I have mostly marquette in my field but figured I'd try a couple of new varieties next year. Ordered a few Chambourcin and St. Vincent. Chambourcin I was able to read up on enough, think I know what I'm getting there. St. Vincent I just...

    Mn1200 ?

I've read some older posts about the MN1200 grape variety that was/is in trials. Haven't found much online on the the subject. I'm over on the west michigan lakeshore and always interested in new cold hardy varieties to try. Is this available to the public yet? Is it better than Marquette?
