correct soil sample - no clay layer?

I took a soil sample but after settling for 2 days, I can't seem to find any clay layer, the top layer is all just liquid so no 3rd layer has settled. I'm pretty sure there must be some layer of clay in the soil? ph seemed to be 7.

ph meter for soil & for wine?

I'd thought of getting the hach pro but it's $120CAD + ph4.0 calibration and the probes only last 2 years. The clorplast test strips are around $50CAD and only meaure to 0.1 accuracy. Milwaukee MW102 unavailable in canada and not much cheaper. Isn;t there anything cheaper for a beginner?

    tilling ground

I'm going to till the ground this autumn in preparation for planting in spring but I'm wondeirng if I should get a tiller? Most store tillers only dig to about 5 or 6inches but I think for vines I'd need to dig to about 12 inches? How long would it take 2 or 3 people to dig a 50ft by 50ft...

I've been looking through the pruning section in a book I have and it says to leave a renewal vine? Aren't all vines renewing themselves the next year? I'm not sure I understand the aim of leaving a short extra vine...is it a safety?

    vine care in cold climates

The "instructions" :) for cold climates say something along the line sof: How can you lay a vine down on the ground when the main vine is a few cms thick? It's a trunk so you would just end up snapping it? ...and any other vines will be a few feet off the ground

    irrigation backyard vineyard

I am planning on a backyard vineyard for about 120 vines in a 50ft by 50ft space. The main problem is that I have 1 outside tap already irrigating a small vegetable garden about 30metres away from the house (100ft). The vineyard area is going to be about 80 metres away (260ft). What are the...

if opening a bottle makes it go off then why doesn't bottling it after fermentation?

If you open a bottle of wine and leave it, it will go off within a day or 2. How come this doesn't happen when you bottle it after fermentation? I know of some places where you can bottle your own wine and cork it. Also, when you are transferring your wine from barrel to bottle, it is exposed...
