November 2013 Wine of the Month Club

Hi Lori. My strawberry chocolate never cleared very well either but my raspberry did. Strawberry has a definite haze. Pectin maybe???? No idea what the differences are between the berries as to why the one is harder to clear. The taste of both are good but but not great. I will continue...

Does this look normal (sorry, I know it's a dumb question)?

Oh, check out some of the beginner threads! Lots of good info. A good easy early drinking wine is danger dave's dragons blood! Dave has some great directions on his post. Try it!

Impatience and wine making do not go together. Impatient people make beer. Beer in 6 weeks - wine typically takes much longer. Types of wine are all different but for what your doing this batch I'm going to go out on a limb and say 7-10 days in your primary bucket and then rack to...

November 2014 Wine of the Month Club

Hi everyone! Just stopped in to say Hello! I've been out of the brewing thing for awhile due to some family issues. I just don't have the time right now although I sure could use a glass or two to deal with all the BS. Glad to see the WOTM club is still moving along!!!

Does this look normal (sorry, I know it's a dumb question)?

Sanitation is important with all brewing, however wine is much more forgiving than beer. Wine you can ferment in a primary bucket with no lid. Cover with a towel to keep out nasties. This is often the preferred method as it invites oxygen to the party for the yeast. If you stir it sanitize...

    lent begins wednesday!

I too gave up drinking. I did shamefully fall off the wagon a time or two, but for the most part stayed true to the cause. Easter is approaching and my thoughts are that since I cheated I need to abstain Easter day as well. Giving up drinking wasn't that bad (easy to say since I cheated)...

    Thinking outside the box

    Thinking outside the box

I put blackberries in a cab/merlot blend. It's young (3 months) but taste really good. I also added 2 tbls tannin in the secondary Jim

    when good wines gone bad

That sounds like a good plan!!! Keep us posted on what you do. You planning on a photo post like you did with the Sang? That was great! I noticed you had two different kits in your photo. You doing both the same, or changing them up a little bit? Maybe do one with the zante's the other...

    when good wines gone bad

Lori, Joe's saying - do them all! add the tannin and zante's to the secondary. When you need to top up use the Cab. This sounds great. I've always used a cheap wine for topping up thinking that it was a small amount and wouldn't add any flavor. Silly silly me. lesson learned. Thanks...

It will increase the SG as the raisins have sugar. I have know idea by how much. I would think nominal amounts. Jim

    Thinking outside the box

I think she added the raisins and tannin to the primary but later transferred to the secondary. There is a picture of the raisins in a carboy. I chose a different route and added the raisins and tannin to the secondary and racked on top of them, giving them a good stir half way to make certain...

Hi jacking the thread (sorry) Is there a trick to bottling with the AIO? I can't figure out the little hole in the tube. I see no difference in flow Jim

"Tips and tricks to using a whole house filter"

O rings on beer kegs can be finicky. Lube helps a lot. I would think it would help on the filter. It's food grade so shouldn't be an issue. It's nasty to put on though. If you try it wear gloves. I just bought an AIO but do not have a filter set up. Jim
