    SP - Sulfur/egg smell - can I fix it?

This is my 3rd batch of SP, it's fermented dry, and now it has the sulfur/egg smell that mentioned as a possibility in the recipe. I didn't have this problem with either other batch, the only real difference here is that it fermented A LOT faster than the other two batches, so it caught me a...

    Apfelwein (Hard German Apple Cider)

Not clearing? I started my batch of Apfelwein on 9/2/12, exactly following the directions, including using the recommended type of apple juice. It is now 2 months later, and it hasn't cleared yet. In fact, it isn't clear at all. Should I just wait some more, or add a fining agent? if the...

Clearly you've never seen the majority of jump airplanes - "perfectly good" would not be an accurate description! :)

WineXpert How much time do you spend making one kit wine?

You need to start making Skeeter Pee, if you're not already. It'll bring that cost per bottle right down! I think total supplies for a 6 gal batch of pee is maybe $20, giving you $0.67 per bottle! :D

Limited wine storage space what do you do?

Isn't the shipping on the Sam's Club racks really expensive though? I have only found them available online, not actually in the retail stores.

    Skeeter Pee bottling alternatives

Thanks! I was wondering what happened to that one. Why don't you just keep it as my way of saying thanks. If you can let me know how the taste has held up in the sun, it would be appreciated. Can't wait to hear!

Vintners Harvest Strawberry Fruit Wine Base - vague directions

Hi all, I bought a 96 oz can of "Vintners Harvest Strawberry Fruit Wine Base" from my LHBS. Using the directions on the side of the can, I now have it in the secondary happily fermenting away. 3 gallons batch, as advised by the LHBS for a stronger taste. The directions, while otherwise...

    Skeeter Pee bottling alternatives

Bottled it last night. Here's what my eclectic assortment of bottles looks like! It has already been a big hit with my most reliable customers (coincidentally, also the ones who supplied the large liquor bottles). I do not expect it to last long. Needless to say I will start another batch...

Adding more lemon juice to SP

I took a sample and added the corresponding amount of lemon juice. I had another sample to compare it to. My wife "shuffled" the two glasses to try to eliminate confirmation bias. It made enough of a difference that I decided to add the additional lemon to the whole batch. Of course this...

Adding more lemon juice to SP

Well, I've already added the Sparkelloid and it is clear. I might take some out for a tasting, add a proportionate amount of lemon juice to the sample, and see if it makes enough difference to bother. Will report back.

Adding more lemon juice to SP

My first batch of SP is almost done, I'm at the last 2 weeks before bottling, after backsweetening. I tasted some, and it tasted fine, just a little light on the lemon. I think I know why this is. I scaled up the recipe for a 6 gallon batch, then ended up with about 6.5 gallons adding sugar...

How did you get started in wine making?

I read the book "Last Call: The Rise and Fall of Prohibition" about a year ago on a recommendation (available at our library, or on Amazon). Pretty interesting reading, and lots about people making wine at home. I figured that sounded interesting, and if they could do it then, I should be able...

    Skeeter Pee bottling alternatives

I know there's some discussion about this already in the forum, but not all in one place and hard to read through all the other good advice for just this. I am almost done my first batch of SP and looking for alternative bottling options. I have some friends who want me to call them the...

Welche's Niagara White Wine (Not From Concentrate)

I made this recipe a few months ago and had the first "public" tasting yesterday with another couple over for dinner. It was a big hit! In fact, such a big hit that my wife had to drive the other couple home. I sent them home with some more of the wine too. I also made a 1 gallon batch from...

    "Stinky feet" smell

Thanks for the ideas, folks. I'm going to take it into the local wine supply store this week (at their suggestion) and see if they can identify what went wrong. Not a real popular aroma, but could sure make a funny label! Actually, the "stinky feet" smell has pretty well disappeared...

    "Stinky feet" smell

Still doesn't taste very good, and cork problems Well, it has been about 6 months since the last post. I bottled the wine on 7/11. Recently I tried some more. About a month and a half ago the wine still tasted pretty bad. Then a couple of weeks ago it tasted not quite so bad (meaning it was...

    "Stinky feet" smell

Thanks all for the advice. I suspected it was just that's it's very early on in the aging process, but since it's my first attempt, wanted to make sure. jdeere5220, I added the sulfite and sorbate on 4/28 as instructed. The degassing went very well, I was surprised at how much gas came out...

    "Stinky feet" smell

Hello all, Been reading a lot and learning on this forum. Thanks! I am almost to the point of bottling my first batch, a WineExperts Merlot. The last time I took a sample out to see if it had cleared yet, it had a slight odor to it – what I would describe as “stinky feet”. Taste was I...
