    Initial Specific Gravity Seems Low

Steve, For the kit(s) I'm making, do I need to ensure a gravity reading =/> 1.080 (20 brix) even if the kit's instructions specify an OG lower than that reading?

    Initial Specific Gravity Seems Low

I'm more of a home brewer than a wine maker. To draw a sample I use a refractometer not a hydrometer. http://cgi.ebay.com/0-32-ATC-Brix-Wort-SG-Beer-Refractometer-Sugar-Wine-/180617711099?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2a0da78dfb I'm reluctant to say whether this is o.k. or not. I'll let...

    Initial Specific Gravity Seems Low

Noob here, so take it FWIW. Was this a kit? If so, it could be that the juice and top-up water were not thoroughly mixed. The juice has more density than water so the juice would naturally seek the bottom. If the sample is drawn from the top, it would give a lower reading.

    Cru Select Chardonnay yeast ?

Thanks for the replies. what's done is done. guess I'll know in a few months. According to the tech sheet for CL23, it's a solid selection for Chardonnay. we'll see. Is is possible to pitch Saccharomyces Cerevisiae into a wine and expect good result? I've so many different strains of...

    Cru Select Chardonnay yeast ?

    I think it's a multiply by 4 conversion so 1.082?

    Cru Select Chardonnay yeast ?

Anyone use 5gal. water "artesian"bottles as secondary?

Yep. Plenty of them on a beer forum I frequent. Beer making, like other hobbies, has multiple ways to achieve the same end. I'd never leave beer in a water jug, but there's plenty that claim they've successfully done just that.:e

    Cru Select Chardonnay yeast ?

I purchased two kits from a kit seller The kits are Cru Select New Zealand Chardonnay and En Premier Australian Shiraz. They both arrived today and I'm in the process of putting together the Chardonnay kit (16 L) The kit included a sachet of Lalvin EC-1118. The seller sent along two...

    Another Question

Bud, for the search function to work, there has to be more than three characters in the search bar. Searching for "oak" won't work. Try "adding oak" or any other key words that are more than three characters and the search should work. Good luck and Cheers!

Anyone use 5gal. water "artesian"bottles as secondary?

Steve, Why the surprise over the beer comment? (I'm assuming that was re: my post.) :ot: The name came from a Simpson's episode when Bart calls Moe's tavern. Moe: (answering the phone) Flaming Moe's. Bart: Uh, yes, I'm looking for a friend of mine. Last name Jass. First name Hugh...

    tubing for vacuum pump

This seller regularly has silicone tubing at affordable pricing. I think it's ~$.50/ft for 50 ft. People on another forum I frequent and have been very pleased with the product and ship times. http://shop.ebay.com/windycityliquidation/m.html?_nkw=&_armrs=1&_from=&_ipg=&_trksid=p3686

Anyone use 5gal. water "artesian"bottles as secondary?

I know people use them as a conditioning vessel for beer, but that is ~ a month. I'd be concerned about oxygen permeation with those.

Corn sugar is simply dextrose. Highly fermentable short chain sugar. You can use any fermentable sugar. I've even heard of people using jolly rogers candies (not that I'd recommend that). when you bottle, in order to carbonate the beer, you add more sugar for the yeast to digest. the...

    Chillin

You only get one shot at it w/ gravity. A pump allows for multiple passes. A pump can return the wort to the kettle and form a whirlpool. This causes the coagulated proteins to seek the center of the kettle, and allow you to leave them in the kettle rather than them ending up in the...

Filling bottles using counter pressure filler

Hmmmm.......I have a nitro tap at home. The bottle is filled w/75%nitro and 25% CO2. I wonder if that's good enough. The way this filler works is you fill to the rim of the bottle. When you remove the bottling wand, the bottle is at the correct fill level. Also, when you remove the...

    Greetings from Mansfield, OH

All - thanks for the warm welcome. Redtrk - I probably know your friend. Mansfield isn't that large of a community. Runningwolf - I'd like to take the family up to the Geneva area this summer for a long weekend of cycling and wine touring. Chachi - My first kit came from thegrape.com...

    First Brew

1028 (London Ale) is a great yeast strain. I'd think 1.5 cups of priming sugar would be too much (see bottle bombs) I've never used the O2 absorbing caps, but I'd doubt oxidation will be an issue, this being your first batch and the beer not likely to stick around long. use this...

    Chillin

Pete, Noob wine maker, old time brewer here. IMO, it depends on your situation whether a immersion or counter flow chiller will be better. both the immersion and counter flow are simple heat exchangers. The immersion runs cold water through copper coil submerged in the wort. In effect...

Filling bottles using counter pressure filler

Here's the message sent to Blichmann: "Greetings. I'm a satisfied owner of a beer gun. I've begun to make wine, too. It says the beer gun can be used to fill wine. I'm concerned with reintroducing CO2 into the wine during the bottling process. Do you have any positive results bottling...

Filling bottles using counter pressure filler

:u <edit: I can't post a link. If you google "blichmann beer gun" You'll see the bottle filler I'm referencing> damn spammers This link says it's ok for wine makers. I think they may mean sparkling wines. I'm going to have to kick them an e-mail. Thanks all for the replies. :b
