    2 gallon lid seal

I have a 6 gallon primary that has a rubber seal in the lid which works well. I recently purchased a 2 gallon primary for smaller batches but it doesn't have a rubber seal and doesn't completely seal. I have been cutting 1/4 inch wide ribbons of clean paper towels and putting them into the lid...

    Weird Thing

My boss made some wine which my wife really liked the flavor. Cranberry w/ grape mix juice. I've been trying to duplicate it but using the recipe he gave me which is just the basic 5 gal juice, 5# sugar, and add yeast 71B. He sanitizes his primary but doesn't add any k-meta to the must, just...

    Another Sorbate Question

I read this on Jack Keller's site "A few words of caution about potassium sorbate are in order. It does impart a taste to the wine, however slight, and you might want to avoid it if you intend to enter your wine in competition. Also, avoid sorbate if you intend to keep your wines a very long...

    Primary too Big???

I have a 6.5 gal primary and am wanting to make a couple of 1 gal batches of different juice. Will that much headspace affect making this small of a batch? I have a 1 gal glass carboy for the secondary. Our Walmart has a sale of Welch's juices on sale for $3.00 with a coupon for $1...

    Do you refrigerate your yeast?

I'm just a newby here but I've always heard that keeping yeast cool is the best way to store it. Heat will kill it so the refrigerator works for me.

Got my first batch in progress

Its bubbling like crazy! I'm using 4 gal Welch's grape juice w/ 1 gal Welch's cranberry. 1/4 tsp Kmeta 24 hrs before pitching 71B yeast. Probably didn't need that much meta since its bottled juice but I'd rather be safe than dirty..... Added 5# of inverted sugar to bring the SG to 1.090 and...

Does Fumaric Acid in juice affect Fermentation

Hi, As a beginner to this, I have been looking at juices a lot differently than before. I know to stay away from benzoate and sorbates but I found a Northland juice at Kroger that shows Fumaric Acid and Ascorbic Acid (Vit C) in it for $2 per gal. I tried some of this and couldn't get any...

    New from Southern KY

Thanks Julie, I think my boss had a 1.005 to 1.010 on this wine he gave us. I am inverting the sugar and adding 1# per gallon which is taking my SG to 1.090, adding 1/4 tsp of Potassium Metabisulfite for 5 gals, waiting 24 hrs, making a yeast starter & nutrient then pitching about 1 hr later...

    New from Southern KY

I didn't get a wine kit. I'm just planning on getting some store bought juice for a first batch. The wine my boss gave me was 3 gals cranberry w/ 1gal grape, 5 # sugar and using 71B-1122 yeast. My wife actually went nuts over this saying it was the best tasting she'd ever had! We don't...

    New from Southern KY

Hello ya'll. I'm 54 yrs old and just got a deluxe winemaking equipment kit for Christmas. I used to work in the ethanol for gasoline industry so I do know enough about fermentation to be dangerous..... I recently got a bottle of homemade wine from my boss and my wife enjoyed it so much and...
