has my wine stopped fermenting completely?

By bubbling I mean that when I stir it up to try and degass, loads of tiny bubles arrise from the bottom. I do have airlocks but they dont bubble anymore. OK I'll get a hydrometer! basiclly it only bubbles when I agitate it I guess its abit like beer, if you agitate it bubbles arrise, if I...

has my wine stopped fermenting completely?

apple wine after all this time hi its me again, you can see how long its been by the previous posts... I did try degassing about 4 months ago, with a drill and peice of brake cable with a loose knot on the end. Seemed to work very well as tons of bubbles came arrising, but I never got close to...

has my wine stopped fermenting completely?

Ok I'll try the degassing test. I havent put any campdentablets in yet, (which I beleive is what you mean by sulphite?) And why would I need a hydrometer? That would tell me the alcohol content? If the fermening has stopped, that means theres no more sugar or the yeast has died? How do you...

has my wine stopped fermenting completely?

Hello winemakers! I still have two demi johns (2x 15 lires aprox) on apple wine that I preared last october. At the beginning it was fermenting rather vigorously, and throughout the spring, summer period it had ceased completly. well thats what I thought until about a month ago I spotted...

Methanol / Methyl alcohol .... Question

If I was to do some distillation of lets say "plum water suger" then I would use a homemade still with a thermometer (where the vapor reaches the condenser or in the liquid to be distilled?) so as to get a more precise distillation. discarding the first 50 ml sounds a bit hit or miss to me...

    apple vinegar?

actually I'm not atall worried about it because I'm sure its gone off in one way or another, I was just wondering if I could use it as vinegar.

    apple vinegar?

I have some apple wine going, and on one racking I had 3 extra liters that wouldnt fit into the demi johns, and had no vessel smalll enough for them... So I racked it into a 5 litre demi john, with a huge air gap. It now smells almost like spirits, and I was wondering could it be vinegar? or...

How many days a week do you drink?

anything from 3 glasses to one bottle of red per evening after work in the week, on weekends I mix drinks and get far too pissed. I used to drink beer everyday, now I drink red wine and I rarely get hangovers unless I really overdo it. (if I havent mixed)

    Ok to bottle?

You only racked twice? If thats the case I would rack again before bottling. Have you tasted it yet? I would not bottle unless YOU tasted it and you liked it. Did you back sweeten? Did you make a f-pac? Do you have a filter? My fruit wines are racked more than 2X and usually bottle in 6 months...

Methanol / Methyl alcohol .... Question

ok I suppose thats why theres no distillation involved (just to rid it of methanol, not the water) in beer making or wine making...because the methanol content is inconsiderable. BUT, then if you drank say a glass of wine, and a glass of spirit with the methanol left in but water taken out...

    Ok to bottle?

I have 2x 15 litre demi johns of apple wine that have ceased fermenting, its actually been about 4 months its ceased... Ive racked it twice in the course of fermentation, on the second racking there was absolutely no way of getting rid of any more sediment. anyways, I was wondering if the...

Methanol / Methyl alcohol .... Question

yes I'm very concerned about the methanol content in my wine too, and in future projects of plum distillation. So Ive gathered that only if using wood, grain or high pectin fruit would yeild enough methanol for concern. BUT on the site "homedistiller" it says: "Methanol is formed when...

    air gap in secondary fermentation!

I love apple juice apart from the often over sweetness ( also depeds on the apple juice, as real apple juice is gorgeous stuff which is just right, nice an acid, I sometimes drink it with water to make it more refreshing ) I added about one kilo of crab apples to 30 kilos of mixed varieties of...

    air gap in secondary fermentation!

great thanks thanks for all these answers, thats all very reasuring! By the time I got back to the computer to look if anyone had replied, I'd already siphoned into two smaller demi johns, the problems were aquiring them from friends and washing them ( with sand & water ) and since Ive just run...

    air gap in secondary fermentation!

Hi there all you brewers, I have a 20 litre demi john filled about 3/4 of the way up so theres quite an air space, and its been like that for about 3-4 days ! Im planning to siphon into two other smaller ones, but do you think its too late? oxidisation problems? its apple wine by the way. plus...
