There should be a little more to extract but not a whole lot. I would toss as its cheap enough not to reuse the oak except for BBQ of course!

Mike, What I should have said is... Should I not use the oak in this batch and save it for the Barolo that I'm...
Just started a Valpolicella Selection Original May 22, 2011 and I want to add extra oak after the first fermentation. I have made the kit as instructed and placed the two oak "dust" packets in the first fermentation. I did replace the yeast with the Lalvin RC 212. My question is when should I...
Thanks everyone for your help. What I am hearing is 1 camden tablet per gallon (that would be 6 in a 6 gallon carboy) crushed up and disolved in wine from the carboy and added every 90 days while it is in the carboy. Clean out the air lock and keep sanitizer fresh in that each time as well...
I am in the start of the 2nd month of bulk aging a VR Pinot Blanc in my 6 gallon carboy. I want to do this for at least 6 months before bottling. How often and how many camden tablets should I add to my wine while bulk aging? Should I crush up the tablets in water and how much water should I...
Steve, I hope not! I degassed the mess out of each of these kits! Whipped them for about 15-20 mins x 2!! Not sure how much more degassing I could have done!
I'm wondering about the yeast. Each kit had the same yeast packet "Red Star Premier Cuvee" with the kits. Does the yeast effect the...
I agree that there is a strange taste to all the 3 kits that I have done. It is the same odd taste in the VR White Zin, Island Mist, and VR Pinot Blanc. Not saying that it's a bad taste...just an odd taste. My oldest is the White Zin (4 months). A friend of mine gave me a VR Merlot that was 9...
I started this kit December 1st and it is progress nicely. Yeast was fine. I had purchased a new pack just in case the one with the kit didn't work. It is now in second fementation and doing wonderfully! I will take a SG reading on the 17th and again on the 18th to make sure that it's stable...
I'll pick up a couple of packets of yeast. Spare Hydrometer?? I guess that would be a good think to have in a fix-it kit if needed as well. Yes, those things do get slippery when you spray them down with sanitizer!! Thanks for the advise...
Thanks everyone for the replys. I'm kinda new to this wine making adventure but I'm gonna have fun with it. I have a kit in the primary and plan to start this kit early December. I'll make it a point to pick up a new packet of yeast. From what I understand it's always good to have a spare...
My local brew house sells a few wine kits and sold me an out of date (according to him)Vinter Reserve Pinot Blanc kit for $35. (kit code 0125809-0359). I thought that I would take a chance on this kit for the $35 and see how it turns out. Anyone ever done an out of date kit? How did it turn out?
