    Somerset Seedless

Before any hard decisions are made I would get your soil tested to get a good understanding of the potential of your specific site. Double A is a great resource but their recommendations are based on their best experiences. Your site, soil, micro climate training and a host of other conditions...

    grape variety question

Greginnd Love the wineries down in that area did you have a chance to go to any up north in the traverse city area? Cab franc is on my short list along with Riesling I'm about 30 miles from lake Michigan which is on the edge of the positive effects of "lake effect" We are trying to put a lot of...

We are in west michigan and are looking to expand our varieties and also someday offer grapes and juice for sale. What we are wondering is what varieties would...

Couple questions for my first batch

As for raisins what I do is place them in a strainer bag and gentle squeeze them a couple times a day during primary. 3 or 4lbs/ gal but it can vary depending on the recipe. Yeast, I use that one all the time and I follow directions and haven't had a problem some say it's not necessary but I...

aging in 6 gallon carboy options?

Just an FYI if you are making wine from kits the the manufacturers figures on you adding water to top up and therefore you are not actually diluting your wine

    Ramblings of a cheapskate....

IMHO using fruit versus juice depends on the type of wine you are making, many lighter bodied fruit and white wines are great on juice alone, however some wines do seem to benefit from time on the whole fruit and all the little goodies that it can provide. For your peach as long as you started...

    hardening off issue - help

I could be way off here but I've heard of something similar in blueberries here in Michigan and its caused by an iron deficiency. If the ph is too high or the soils compact such as clay it's hard for the plant to process iron. I don't know if this helps hopefully someone else will have some...

question site prep (fall before planting) and do I need a cover crop?

As long as you have access to a backhoe I would go down at least three feet. Grapes are very deep rooting plants and the more you loosen the soil the better. If it were me I would till the entire field, plant a cover crop and till it under again in the spring prior to planting. Then worry...
