Thanks so much for the input. Just wondering if the final results were positive. I've seen wine loose some color after filtering, so how about taste...? Better, worth the effort?

Has anyone attempted making their own wine filter. I have a small pump for transferring wine to carboy, wondering if it has enough pressure to force wine through some sort of household water filter or some such. Thanks

Morning from Ohio;
Have often wondered what effects the vacuum process has on my wines after clarification. It seems that the "boiling" taking place never really stops completely. Does alcohol evaporate during vacuuming and is there a point where you just cry uncle and say enough is...
23 gallon barrel. Has had 3 runs of red over the last two years. I'm wondering if the barrel sets w/o wine for a year should I simply clean as best I can and allow to dry with periodic sulphur burns.
Thanks John. The barrel will have to set empty because I don't have anything to fill it yet. Possibly a year away before anything from 2018 is ready to barrel.

Morning All; I have a 23 gallon oak barrel that will set empty for 6 months. I've read about critic acid and meta added to water in the barrel but I don't know how much of each per gallon.
Thanks
Bruce
Evening All;
Couple questions on vacuum racking. First how do you tell when vacuum racking is finished. My bubbles never seem to stop rising to the top.
And second, does vacuum racking evaporate or boil off alcohol?
Thanks;

Our Zin from grapes is doing nicely. They were pressed after 10 days in the primary, MLF bacteria was added and all are sitting in the carboy. It's been about 4 weeks since MLF was added and I still see very small bubbles occasionally rising along the carboy neck but I need a magnifying glass...
Ok, how long was the cork you used? I've heard you could smear a little glycern on the cork and it would slide easier.
When all is said and done the cork was about 2.5 inches long.
